Who can get Rehabilitation Services? You may be able to get rehabilitation services if you have a visual disability that makes it hard for you to get training, find a job or the personal independence you want. To find out if you can get services, State Services for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (SSB) counselor will look at reports from your doctor and school. First SSB will ask you (or your parent or guardian) if it’s OK to do that. If SSB can’t assist you, SSB will tell you about other people who can. What can SSB do? You and your SSB counselor will talk about what you’re good at, what you like and what you need. This is part of planning for a job and the personal independence you want. Together you will set up a plan to meet your goals. This plan is called the Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE). SSB has many services. You and your counselor will pick the ones that are best for you. Some of them are: q Adjustment to blindness: orientation and mobility training, and rehabilitation teaching q Low vision services q Counseling q Assistance in finding and keeping a job q Tools and supplies needed to reach your goals q Telecommunication and sensory aids q Vocational training What will it cost? There is no charge for counseling or job placement services. If you need services that cost money, your counselor will know about ways to pay for them. SSB can also pay for some of the services. What will SSB ask me to do? You will be asked to work with your counselor to make and follow your SSB plan. Your ideas about what you want to do and what you need are important. Feel free to ask questions. If you think your plan should be changed let your counselor know. If you wish, your family, or someone else you choose, can work with you and SSB to plan what is right for you. How do I find out more?
